Niagara Falls USA and the surrounding region offers some of the best hiking trails. With various difficulty levels, hiking can be easy, affordable and fun for the entire family. A trek through the wilderness is a great way to experience Niagara Falls in winter.

If you’re seeking a guided hike, or want to learn more about the great outdoors, partake in one (or all) of the Niagara Region Interpretive Programs Office activities offered this winter. All pre-scheduled programs are FREE and intended for individuals and families. Space is limited in all programs. Pre-registration is required via phone, 716-282-5154.​


January 31, 2023: Gorge-ous Trees

Devil’s Hole State Park, Niagara Scenic Parkway, Niagara Falls
1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Learn about the winter ecology of the gorge and about its very old and very special trees, along the path from Devil’s Hole State Park to Whirlpool State Park and back.

February 1, 2023: Animal Evidence

Joseph Davis State Park, 4143 Lower River Road, Lewiston
12:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. Take a short hike and see if you can find any evidence of the animals of the Niagara Region. Work on your track and scat identification skills!

February 2, 2023: Winter Wetlands

9:00 a.m.-10:30 a.m. Did you know the Niagara River Corridor is the only designated wetland of international importance in New York State? Learn more and celebrate World Wetlands Day with us on a walk!

February 4, 2023: Winter Watercolors

10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Celebrate the outdoors by making nature-inspired art indoors! No prior art experience is necessary to attend and enjoy this creativity-boosting event.

February 4, 2023: Winter Writing – A Journaling Journey

2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. The quiet of winter can be conducive to enhancing our powers of observation. Exercise your body and mind on a short walk, followed by an interactive indoor journaling activity with us!

February 7, 2023: Frosted Forests

11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. What happens to the forests when they freeze? Come find out while taking a naturalist guided walk in the woods!

February 7, 2023: Trivia Tuesday – Nature Bingo

6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. Come one, come all to compete with friends and family alike in a game of Nature Bingo! Figure out clues to fill in spaces and win small prizes!

February 14, 2023: Gull-entines Day

8:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m. Fall in love with birds on Valentine’s Day on Goat Island! Learn bird identification and fun facts while focusing on the gulls of the Niagara River.

February 14, 2023: Valentine’s Day Candle Lantern Walk

6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Happy Valentine’s Day! Make a lantern and discover the park at night with a walk through the old growth woods.

February 18-19, 2023: Birds on the Niagara at Goat Island

February 25, 2023: Art of Invasion – Zebra and Quagga Mussels

2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. What is striped, shelled, and found all over? Zebra and quagga mussels! Learn about these aquatic invaders (and how to paint them) during an entertaining and informative program with an enthusiastic naturalist.

February 26, 2023: Sounds of the Season

Whirlpool State Park, Niagara Scenic Parkway, Niagara Falls
10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. This program focuses on the sounds of your environment. Take a short hike and find somewhere nice to sit and listen. Bring your own nature journal or one will be provided. Make a sound map or take note of all the different sounds you hear.
